Literature Review #2

My main scholarly source that I would like to use is the written by Meg Jay about the importance and impact that their age has on an individual and their future when they're in their twenties. Meg Jay can be trusted when talking about topics such as this because she has a PhD in psychology is currently a successful and influential clinical psychologist with many studies that she has conducted herself. She wrote the novel The Defining Decade, which focuses on three important aspects on one's life when in their twenties: work, love, and the brain/body. Since most college students start their twenties during their time in college, this book can be applied directly to college students.

My main focus when approaching this book is when Meg Jay defines the term "Identity Capital", which is what my research question will be on. Identity capital is defined in this book as "...a collection of personal assets- a repertoire of individual resources that we assemble over time". My research will be based on connecting this idea of identity capital with fraternities and whether they help build it or not. Another big key point in this book that I found very interesting is "80% of your experiences are have happened by the time you are 35". This basically shows that an individual experiences a lot on in their twenties, and even though college is only the beginning of their twenties, it gives them the most opportunities to build a strong groundwork for the rest of their lives.

  1. I like this idea of "identity capital" and wonder if you can find other sources that use that term. A quick search of articles via the Rutgers libraries site turned up almost 800 peer reviewed research articles out there with that term, "identity capital" (which I put in quotes). It would be good to have a second or third source that uses that term.
